What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) ?
This technology is gaining popularity as a means of treating skin conditions or hair removal and is based on directing high intensity light into a focused area of skin for short intervals.
IPL technology is best employed by trained aestheticians or medical personnel who are licensed to operate these devices for hair removal or skin photo rejuvenation procedures.
In the case of hair removal, the intense pulsed light travels through the skin to strike the hair root where the light energy is converted to heat thus destroying or damaging the root's capability to regrow hair. The overall effect is that of a permanent hair reduction.
In the case of skin photo rejuvenation, IPL procedures aid in the treatment of sun or age spots, acne, rosacea, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. The intense light pulses induce micro trauma in the top layers of the skin causing the skin to heal itself with new cells hence the term photo rejuvenation.
The discomfort associated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment ranges from slight irritation or a burning feeling to blisters depending on the device settings and experience of the operator. It is very important to check the credentials and training of the operator to avoid permanent skin damage.
